The Three Villages

Attard, Balzan and Lija are popularly known as The Three Villages because of the many characteristic features they have in common.

Balzan, though relatively a small village, has an interesting history going back to the 14^th Century. In the 16^th century most of the dwelling houses were farmhouses. In 1655 Balzan was erected a separate parish from the larger parish Birkirkara of which it previously formed part. During the 17^th and 18^th centuries wealthy noble families started to settle in Balzan, building large houses in the older part of the village. Today, Balzan still retains the characteristics of a typical Maltese village with narrow winding streets and blind alleys that can still be seen in the older part and where one can admire the vernacular architecture.
