About the Locality

PIETA

Pieta is a coastal town along the waterfront from Floriana to Sliema. Its notable landmark is the old customs house turned boathouse, which used to be a departure point for ferries to Gozo.

During the Great Siege of 1565, Pieta was an Ottoman encampment, later attracting settlers due to its proximity to Valletta. The name “Pieta” derives from the chapel Our Lady of Sorrows, built in 1612 and still in use today.

Pieta expanded with a cholera cemetery in 1865 and a military cemetery in 1915. Guardamangia, once a promontory, saw urbanisation with the construction of St. Luke’s Hospital in the 1930s.

A notable property in the locality is Villa Guardamangia. Noted for its ornate porch accessed by a double staircase and unique architectural elements, the villa gained fame when it served as the residence for Princess Elizabeth of Great Britain, later Queen Elizabeth II, during her time in Malta from 1949 to 1951 while her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, served in the Royal Navy.
